DAN RIVER

Where Scenic Beauty Meets Easygoing Adventure

Go With the Flow on the Dan

The first time you step down to the banks of the Dan River in Stokes County, you notice how calm it feels. The water moves at an easy pace, sliding past smooth stones and shaded banks as if it’s been doing this same quiet work forever, which, in a way, it has. Locals don’t rush the river, and visitors quickly learn there’s no need to. This is a place to slow down, listen to the water, and let the day unfold naturally.

Whether you’re floating along in a kayak, wading in to cast a line, or just sitting on the bank with your feet in the cool water, the Dan invites you to take part in its rhythm. Bald eagles and herons often drift overhead. In the warmer months, you’ll spot families laughing from canoes, anglers tucked into quiet bends, and the occasional inner-tube ride carried along by the current. Even on busier days, the river somehow keeps its peaceful feel.

More Than a River

What makes the Dan special isn’t just the scenery, though the forested hills, open farmland, and rocky outcrops are beautiful, it’s the way the river connects everything. It threads through small towns, parks, and pastures, shaping the life of Stokes County just as it has for generations. At sunset, when the light stretches across the water and the hills grow quiet, it’s easy to understand why so many people feel a strong pull to this place.

You don’t need an agenda on the Dan River. Some people come for adventure, others for solitude, and many for a bit of both. Whatever brings you here, the river tends to give back more than expected: unhurried moments, simple beauty, and that rare feeling of truly being present in a place.

The Mountains, Away from the Mountains

Rising dramatically from the rolling Piedmont of northern North Carolina, the Sauratown Mountains are a scenic jewel of Stokes County, offering some of the most unexpected and breathtaking mountain views in the state. This ancient quartzite range forms a striking skyline of rugged cliffs, forested ridges, and sheer rock faces that feel worlds away from everyday life, yet are easily accessible in central North Carolina.

For hikers, the Sauratown Mountains are a true highlight of North Carolina’s trail network. Sections 7 & 8 of the renowned Mountain-to-Sea Trail winds across the crest of the range, connecting Hanging Rock State Park with nearby Pilot Mountain from the mountains to the coast. This nationally celebrated trail offers everything from gentle woodland walks to challenging ridge-top climbs, rewarding adventurers with panoramic views that stretch across the Piedmont on clear days. Along the way, interpretive signage and diverse ecosystems highlight the area’s geology, plant life, and wildlife, making every step both inspiring and educational.

Equestrian enthusiasts will also find a special connection to the Sauratowns through the Sauratown Mountain Horseback Riding Trails. These dedicated trails provide riders with a peaceful and scenic way to experience the mountains, passing through hardwood forests, along creek crossings, and over gentle ridges ideal for leisurely rides or longer excursions. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or enjoying a guided outing, horseback travel here offers a timeless way to connect with the land. Within the State Park the Tory's Den and Ruben Mountain Trials are perfect for horseback.
